The world's smallest personal locator beacon, launched at the London Boat Show in the UK in January, is suitable for the commercial shipping sector, its manufacturer has confirmed. The rescueME PLB1 is said to be 30 smaller than a typical PLB and its specified features include: one-hand fitting to lifejackets; retractable antenna and flip-up cover to prevent inadvertent use; high brightness ＞1 candela strobe light with moulded lens to enhance visibility; and seven-year battery life and warranty. A flotation lanyard is provided for use when it is not possible to fit the PLB1 to a lifejacket. According to its manufacturer, Ocean Signal, to activate the unit the antenna is extended, the protective cover flipped up, and the button pressed.
