Technology propels Norway's shipyards

According to the IHS Fairplay database, Norwegian shipbuilders completed a total of 58 ships in 2012 with a combined gross tonnage (gt) of 188,250 tonnes. This represents an increase of seven vessels compared with the previous year. Of shipbuilding output during 2012, no less than 75 of all ship completions were for vessels destined for service in the offshore support sector. This majority share comprised 24 offshore supply vessels (OSVs), 9 crewboats, 3 remotely operated vehicle (ROV) survey support ships, 2 anchor handling tugs, 2 safety standby vessels, and 2 seismic support vessels. In addition, one diving support vessel and a single offshore maintenance vessel were completed in Norway last year. Norway's remaining shipbuilding output in 2012 comprised six vessels for service in the fishing industry, six passenger ferries, and two salvage tugs.
