The main issue in the antifouling and coatings market used to be that of environmental protection under the water: preventing chemicals used in products from affecting organisms in the sea. However, a subtle shift in emphasis now sees attention focused mainly on using coatings to reduce above-water pollution. There are a number of issues and challenges facing legislators, shipowners, and manufacturers of antifouling and above-water coatings, but reducing emissions to air by reducing fuel consumption has taken centre stage.
