Different approaches fuel VOC debate

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or solvents are attracting increasing attention from regulators, but the way that they are regulated differs in the US and Europe. Speaking at a recent conference, David Mather from International Paints provided an overview of the need for VOCs in marine coatings, and the effect that evolving regulations could have on their use. VOCs are lost from a coating during drying and enter the air where, with other chemicals in the atmosphere, they can cause environmental and health problems, and damage agricultural crops and forests.
