In these environmentally conscious days, a quick way to make yourself socially unacceptable is to slaughter a whale. That, admittedly unintentionally, is what container ship Mae-rsk Norwich achieved in June last year when, somewhere between Colombia and Rotterdam, it skewered a 12m-long fin whale, making the ship's bow more than usually bulbous. The faux pas was horribly public, as Maersk Norwich then bore its cetacean trophy into the Dutch port.
