The US Vessel General Permit (VGP) applies to several sources of water on board vessels, including the water that gathers inside anchor chain lockers. The US authorities have decided that this water can also be a conduit for invasive species and must be treated as such. Under the new VGP rules, which come into force this December, the anchor chain must be carefully and thoroughly washed down as it is being hauled out of the water to remove sediment and marine organisms. In addition, chain lockers must be cleaned thoroughly during dry-docking to eliminate accumulated sediments and any potential accompanying pollutants.
