LNG power enters the box sector

News that shipping giant CMA CGM is considering the acquisition of box ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) has highlighted the growing interest in environmentally friendly means of propulsion in the container ship sector. LNG-fuelled vessels are being ordered in increasing numbers, but it is only very recently that the first containerships to have LNG propulsion were ordered, by US-based TOTE. Now, container ship major CMA CGM has revealed that, having completed a wide-ranging study of alternative propulsion concepts - for which read 'more environmentally friendly propulsion' - it has identified LNG as the best option.
