Subterranean shipways

The Stad Ship Tunnel scheme described above is far from the first attempt to overcome natural barriers to water transport and, should it be built, it will not be the longest waterway tunnel. That honour belongs to the Rove Tunnel in France, which is 7.2km long and 22m wide. Opened in 1927 to connect Marseille with the Rhone Canal, it was closed in 1963 after it was blocked by a rock fall.
