THE TINIEST DETAILS in fishing often decide our angling results. Fishing with competent anglers serves to reinforce how subtle changes in tackle and technique can increase your catch rate. Sometimes it's only slightly tweaking a lure, other times it's a whole new approach. I was talking to gun south coast angler Kaj Bush recently. He explained how his good mate, Kevin Gleed, catches whiting on poppers. I had visions of being super sly, flicking tiny poppers on ultra-light leaders to tempt die wary fish. But as Bushy pointed out, you work the small poppers in a series of solid plops, much like you would for gianttrevally (GTs). And it gets even stranger; forget the light leaders, a short length of stiff 8-10kg mono is the trick. This heavier line effectively keels the lure, helping it track truer through the water. Had these guys not caught so many good whitingon poppers I'd have thought diey were telling porky pies, but the amazing results speak for themselves.
