Nick Wood goes bush bashing with some mates through Lord Howe Island in search of kingfish ledges. THIS STORY BEGINS on the breakwall in Kiama, NSW, and will probably continue for as long as I have the strength in my legs to get to the best fishing spots Australia has to offer. I had waited nearly five hours without a sniff when my float disappeared under the surface—my fate was sealed. Within 10 seconds a beast from below had me quaking in my boots, wondering what could have pulled so hard to challenge the strength of my arm muscles. As the 15kg line broke like cotton, I heard the mirth-filled chuckle from a fellow rock fisho, "That was a kingie, mate".
