The Madison (Wis.) Water Utility (MWU) unveiled its newly reconstructed Well No. 7. The reconstructed well improves water quality, pumping station reliability, and fire protection capacity for Madison residents. Well No. 7 serves as an essential part of the City of Madison's overall water supply system, providing water to more than 10,000 residents annually. Originally constructed in 1939, Well No. 7 was state-of-the-art then with a 511 -m~3 (135,000-gal) reservoir and a facility capacity of 7.95 m~3/min (2100 gal/min). The well house contained one booster pump, which along with the well pump discharge, was located below grade. This configuration posed a problem with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources code. Being below ground also increased the potential for contamination, should the basement flood. The water previously found in the well contained elevated levels of manganese and iron that resulted in colored water events and customer complaints.
