While Bloom uses algae harvested from freshwater to make ethylene-vinyl acetate foams, scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) examine the cause of harmful algal blooms. These scientists initially believed the cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa, caused the blooms that occurred in summer 2016 in southern Florida's Lake Okeechobee, the St. Lucie Canal and River, and the Caloosahatchee River. However, they discovered a total of 28 species of cyanobacteria in the blooms.
