CHINA: THE CORE FACTOR

The trend lines for the two trades, along with the combined box throughput growth for China's ports are shown in figure 1 and reveal that the latter posted very strong rates of annual increases despite the presence of several maturing big ports. This was because of the strength of Europe and the emergence of new and strong expanding smaller markets. However, the past two years have witnessed something of a change, which analysts have attributed to 'lower containerisation run rates' and Europe's demand for Chinese exports slowing more quickly than expected.
