According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), approximately 90% of world trade is carried by ship, and over 70% of world general cargo trade is shipped in containers. International shipping now contributes between 3% and 3.5% of global carbon dioxide (C02) emissions and estimates suggest this could rise by 250% by 2050.
