The South African Government is to consider introducing legislation that will restrict the nation's cabotage trade to domestically-flagged vessels. The move is designed to build up a national coastal fleet, expand job opportunities in the country's maritime sector and further support the African Union's adoption of the African Maritime Transport Charter that was signed around four years ago.
