In this issue's 'Trade route intelligence' feature, the transpacific is reviewed and it is likely to be another difficult year for the ocean carriers involved. While freight rates have picked up this year and there was a certain amount of optimism in the run-up to the peak season, with demand only expected to increase in the 2.5%-4% range - well short of the trade's long-term average growth of 7%-8% - and several service strings being resurrected, considerable carrier discipline will be needed if profits are to be returned [p64].
