CAPACITY CONCERNS LOOM FOR OCEAN CARRIERS

The average utilisation of all westbound vessels sailing from the Mediterranean to the east coast of North America (ECNA) is expected to reach 84% in Q2 12, compared with the 90% previously predicted. Although forecast cargo growth for the year has been increased from 4% to 6%, just over 8% additional vessel capacity was deployed between February 1 and May 1 due to a change in cargo mix, improving the maximum permissable. Lighter cargo is now being shipped, which should have been allowed for in the previous forecast.
