Los Angeles (LA) port's executive director Geraldine Knatz is in an upbeat mood. Despite the spectre of competition from the US east coast (USEC) terminals looming when the wider Panama Canal opens, she is ready to meet the challenge and appears confident that LA will come out on top. 'My feeling is that the impact will be gradual,' she said. 'It's a dynamic environment and at a really fascinating time.' Knatz has been LA's executive director since 2006, and is seen as something of a trailblazer in the industry, having won a clutch of 'Woman in Business' awards (see 'Career merits').
