In 2011 ports in North America (Canada, US and Mexico handled 51.82 million TEU, up less than 2 on 2010's 50.75 million TEU and still 1.6 lower than the record 52.67 million TEU processed in 2007. For US ports alone, the 42.74 million TEU handled last year was just over 5 shy of the 45 million TEU moved through them in 2007. The figures mainly reveal the weakness of the US economy since the financial crisis of 2008 and the significant pressure this caused on consumer sentiment. Indeed, apart from a recovery spike in 2010, the growth in imports from Asia has generally slowed.
