Evolution of grapevine variety collections in Australia

Recent discussion following the discovery by CSIRO that the Albarino vines in its collection were in fact Savagnin Blanc has brought into focus strategic issues involving grapevine variety collections in Australia. This paper traces some of the historical aspects of grapevine variety collections and some of the key issues that are involved, such as those related to grapevine naming and identification. We detail the development of DNA typing methodology for grapevines by CSIRO, and the uptake of thistechnology by many others in various forms throughout the world. Some of the issues surrounding the use of DNA typing in collections management are discussed, in particular the need to consider the application of the technology in the wider internationalcontext, together with the associated need for agreed international standards in its application. We conclude by considering some next steps, the current limitations on progressing to these next steps, and how such technology may be improved and integrated into potential procedures for variety accreditation and traceability.
