Maintaining a quality brand image and distributor-relationship are the best means of protection against the problems associated with counterfeiting. WHEN DANNIEL AMADIO learned another winery had been selling wine in labels virtually identical to hisown, he was surprised by what he calls a gap in policy. "Label copyright is not policed in any way by the industry heads - you basically have to find out yourself as I did and then proceed in the right course of action," said Amadio, winemaker at AmadioWines in the Adelaide Hills. Amadio is a recent casualty of wine label counterfeiting in China. In March, Amadio was contacted by one of his importers in China who alerted him about different wines being sold under labels that were virtually identical tothe labels of Amadio's Fetch and Farmgate 8 wines.
