Conditioning Portuguese oyster broodstock:' some diets are better than others

The Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea ungulate) could be a promising species for aquaculture and the conservation of pure populations of this species is important in both the context of production diversification and preserving biodiversity. Thus the zoo-technological development for hatchery production of seed is extremely important.Conditioning broodstock is an important step in the process of rearing bivalveseed in the hatchery. Of the many factors that regulate the reproductive cycle, food is most important, however, the influence of the nutritional quality of different phytoplankton species on sexual maturation has been poorly explored. At the AquacultureEurope conference held last fall in San Sebastian, Spain, C atarina Anjos, of the Instituto Politecnico de Leiria, Peniche, Portugal and of the Instituto Portugues do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA, LP.) described experiments to evaluate the effects of different conditioning diets on sexual maturity and reproductive output of C. angulata.
