Orticles about North America's western drought; its severity, its effects on nature and human activities, and what is being done to combat these effects have appeared frequently in recent months.Last October several of these articles dealt with plansfor state and federal hatcheries to install "giant devices" to cool incoming water supplies.Indeed, the severity of drought conditions had forced the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DF&W) to move all rainbow trout out of the American River Hatchery and install water chillers.When I called Dr. Bill Cox, the Fishery Program Manager, recently; my first questions were: "Did it work?" "Did you get the results you wanted?" That's when I learned the "rest of the story."
