摘要

Future environmental and economic sustainability of aquaculture will depend to a large extent on improvements to large-scale hatchery production. Currently, the high variability in both quantity and quality of larval yields limits industry growth. However, new biotechnological advances in -omics promise to revolutionize the way we assess and solve bottlenecks in hatchery production and other aquaculture sectors. At the European Aquaculture Society meetings held last fall in San Sebastian, Spain, Dr. Andrea Alfaro of the Institute for Applied Ecology in Auckland, New Zealand, described an innovative approach to understanding the physiological condition of mussellarvae by using metabolomics, which provides an instantaneous snapshot of larval physiology through metabolite profile analysis.
