Research scientists at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) reached something of a milestone early this past summer when they managed to "close the life cycle" of the Atlantic or Northern bluefin tuna (NBFT) or Thunnus thynnus in captivity. The achievement was a reassuring result of work undertaken in various projects and initiatives that IEO researchers Aurelio Ortega and Dr Fernando de la Gandara have developed at the institute's MurciaOceanographic Centre during the last 10-15 years - work in which there has been collaboration with the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and several companies in the aquaculture sector in the region, notably those of Grupo Ricardo Fuentes e Hijos.
