For the 22.1 issue, we bring together articles on the design of instructions, typography and users' experience. The first article addresses an important aspect of typesetting texts: drawing readers' attention to words. This is a typographic challenge to which Dyson and Beier bring a fresh view. Based on the outcomes of their empirical study on typographic differentiation for emphasis, they discuss the role of bold and expanded fonts, underlining the possible benefits of using italics for this purpose. The article goes beyond merely research data and looks at the test fonts from both the physical and perceptual domains. Dyson and Beiers findings provide stimulating insights to information designers, since emphasis is an important aspect of typographic articulation.
