Time for Canadian Aquaculture Act

Canada has a crucial need for a national Aquaculture Act says Ruth Salmon, Executive Director for the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA). Salmon stated that Canada's aquaculture industry has languished and struggled to get by as best it can for 10 years. The main reason for that, said Salmon, is industry oversight utilizes a patchwork of regulations under the federal Fisheries Act. This Act was first developed around the 1890s, to oversee, regulate and manage commercial fish harvesting. No fish farms existed or were even contemplated at the time and; therefore, no provision was made for them.
