Workforce standards issued for safe and effective care

RCN has set out collective UK standards for employers, health regulators and organisations to support the nursing workforce. Anew set of workforce standards for all nurse employers has been launched by the RCN. This is the first time the college has set out detailed expectations for employers, regulators and organisations to support nurses' work and patient safety. The 14 Nursing Workforce Standards include not counting support staff as nurses and drawing up contingency plans if the workforce is compromised. They were released at the same time as the results of an online RCN-commissioned survey from between 23 and 25 April. The poll attracted 1,752 responses from members of the public, of whom 70% (1,226) agreed that there are too few nurses to provide safe care.
