Bob Hanson is Professor of Chemistry at St. Olaf College and Principal Developer of Jmol, an open source viewer of chemical structures in 3D. He is Task Group Chair of the IUPAC FAIRSpec project, which is creating standards for sharing spectroscopic data. This interview has been edited for clarity.
