The amino acid dehydroalanine (Dha) is found in a number of proteins and nonribosomal natural products,and typically arises from post-translational modifications of serine or cysteine.This a,p-unsaturated amino acid can alter the conformation,rigidity,and proteolytic susceptibility of the polypeptide backbone.In addition,intra- or intermolecu-lar electrophilic Michael addition reactions with this reactive amino acid can lead to the formation of Dha adducts,including intramolecular lanthionine crosslinks.
