The Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) is one of the most fascinating phenomena underlying many areas of modern physics and chemistry.The author of the book,Isaac Bersuker,is one of the founders of this field,whose own contributions greatly influenced the development of the subject and present-day understanding of the JTE (one need only mention his discovery of the tunnel-splitting effect in polyatomic systems with degenerate electronic terms,the proof of the unique role of the JTE as a source of atomic instability,and the development of the vibronic theory of ferroelectric-ity).
