The performance of groups is a topic of great importance to radiologists. To begin with, there are very few solo practitioners in radiology. Most radiologists work in groups, where the performance of each member hinges to a large extent on the effectiveness of the group. Even radiologists in solo practice often participate in professional groups of one kind or another, ranging from hospital capital and credentialing committees to local and national professional organizations. Most radiologists also play a role in one or more nonpro-fessional groups, such as civic and religious organizations. Finally, every radiologist has a family and a circle of friends. Although much of the day-to-day work of many radiologists is relatively solitary, as members of group practices, hospital medical staffs, professional societies, and the like, radiologists have a strong interest in understanding and enhancing group performance.
