The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) met for the first time in Africa in May when the Government of Kenya hosted the 1995 Mid-term Meeting in Nairobi. The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) played the lead role in organizing this meeting, assisted by both ICRAF and the International Livestock Research Centre (ILRI). CGIAR Chairman Ismail Serageldin presided. The Honourable Zachary T Onyonka, Kenya's Minister for Research, Technical Training and Technology, opened the meeting, accompanied by Agriculture Minister Simeon Nyachae.
