According to Oxford English Dictionary, mines are defined as a pit or excavations in the earth from which mineral substances (precious stones, coal, ores) are taken by digging or by some other methods of extraction. Mining is a process which involvesremoval of minerals from the earth's crust, for the welfare and prosperity of mankind (Patnaik and Ray, 1986).
