One of the first plants I ever fell in love with was an acer. It was in a garden l used to work in, and had deep burgundy, finely cut, filigree foliage, a slightly weeping habit and was draped over the edge of a Yorkstone path. As well as the plant itself, it was the name I loved - Acer paImatum var. dissectum Dissectum Atropurpureum Group - which, when mastered, just trips off the tongue. Once smitten, I realised there were literally hundreds of varieties of acer in different shapes, sizes and intricacies. I realised I could find one to suit pretty much any size of garden, Another huge advantage is that they thrive in a degree of shade and will therefore grow happily in most city gardens.
