Drought-tolerant, tough and pretty, alpine plants are perfect for today's gardens, says MontyFor the past couple of years, the earliest months in my garden have been brilliantly lit with colour. From the deep indigo, lapis, purple and yellow of Iris reticulata,! I. histrioides and I. danfordiae, to the chocolate heads flared with primrose yellow of FritiUaria michailovskyi nodding under the cover of the cool greenhouse, I enjoy these plants with a delight slightly tinged with regret that I have not grown them with real purpose until recently. But I suppose I felt that they - among all the other gorgeous bulbs that we place into the 'alpine' category - were somehow not part of my horticultural vocabulary. I had not learned to appreciate them or the many others in this group of plants, from exquisite little bulbs to small shrubs.
