Gmelin-Beilstein Memorial Medal for Henning Hopf

The Gmelin-Beilstein Memorial Medal is awarded biennially by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh; German Chemical Society) to German and international recipients for outstanding contributions to the history of chemistry, chemical literature, or chemical information. The recipient of the 2014 medal is Henning Hopf (Technische Universitat Braunschweig). Hopf studied at the University of Gottingen, and worked with Harlan L. Goering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for his PhD, which was awarded in 1967. He subsequently carried out his habilitation with Hans Musso at the Universities of Marburg and Karlsruhe, and was also a postdoctoral researcher with H. Monty Frey at the University of Reading. After completing his habilitation in 1972, he remained at the University of Karlsruhe, and joined the faculty at the University of Wtirzburg in 1975. He moved to the Technische Universitat Braunschweig in 1978, and remained there until his retirement in 2006. Hopf's research includes the preparation and study of unsaturated compounds, including olefins, allenes, acetylenes, cumulenes, aromatic compounds (mostly cyclophanes), and retinoids. He is Co-Editor of Modern Cyclophane Chemistry and has reported in Angewandte Chemie on tribenzotriqumacene. Hopf was President of the GDCh from 2004-2006.
