Japan's overseas cooperation in agricultural and rural development

Since the Meiji era in the 1860s, Japan has had its share of experience as a developing nation receiving support from more advanced countries. Alongside financing from the World Bank, Japan have received guidance from European and American engineers, adopting from them modem irrigation engineering and rural planning technologies. This history informs the foundation of Japan's philosophy of economic assistance - to support the self-help effort of developing country.
