Biofouling is expensive for the society. Bacterial adhesion on medical implants before operation can cause complicated infections. Barnacle adhesion on tankers increases the friction to water and thus more fuel is needed to move the tanker. Adhesion of mold outdoors on a painted house decreases the value of the property and indoors it is a health issue.
