Working in any veterinary environment presents staff with a variety of occupational hazards and risks on a daily basis. Therefore, it is important for a business such as a veterinary practice to carry out a risk assessment. There is considerable evidence that shows effective safety and health management in the workplace contributes to business success, as accidents and ill-health inflict significant costs, which can be often hidden and underestimated. Carrying out a risk assessment, preparing a safety statement and implementing what you have written down is not only central to any health and safety management system, it is required by law. Employers are ethically bound to do all they can to ensure that employees do not suffer illness, a serious accident or death, and employees are responsible for ensuring they do not take unnecessary risks and are not endangering other members of staff by their actions (Health and Safety Authority, 2012).
