The gas industry has always been acutely aware of its position in the energy market, in that it provided a fuel of choice rather than a fuel of necessity. Safety reliability and efficiency have always been priorities in the gas production, distribution and utilisation areas to ensure that the reputation of gas was enhanced. The use of gas really took off in Australia with the discovery and subsequent distribution of natural gas in the late 60s and early 70s. Prior to the introduction of natural gas/towns gas'was manufactured from coal or oil feedstock. 'Towns gas'was not used widely by industry at that time being used primarily in the domestic and light commercial areas. The industry funded Australian Gas Association (AGA) was formed in 1962 to represent industry participants, including gas producers, gas utilities, LPG suppliers, appliance manufacturers and installers. The gas industry was aware of the need to improve its image, safety standards and market share. The AGA formed committees to produce industry codes of practice covering all essential areas including the design and construction of gas distribution systems, gas appliance approvals and gas installations.
