New reference number for IP Code

The IP Code, AS 1939-1990, is referred to by many Australian and joint Australian/New Zealand Standards. Committee EL-026 recently approved publication of a revised edition of the IP code under the new reference number AS 60529-2004. AS 60529-2004 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) superseded the previous IP Code, AS 1939-1990, on 27 January 2004. The two wall charts, supplement 1 and supplement 2 to AS 1939, which give a symbolic representation of the protection afforded by the IP Code, are still available and will be reviewed later this year. The objective of AS 60529 is to give definitions for degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment, with regard to protection of persons against access to hazardous parts inside the enclosure and protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects and harmful effects due to the ingress of water. It also provides tests to verify that the enclosure meets the requirements of the Standard.
