Reducing the risk of injury is a major consideration in the design and construction of playgrounds. An expectation for improved safety coupled with rising insurance premiums and fears over liability and litigation have already seen a dramatic change in the kind of play equipment designed, manufactured and installed in Australian playgrounds over the last decade. New Standards for playground equipment will specify general (Part 1) and particular (Part 2 - Part 6) requirements that will protect children from hazards they may not be able to foresee when using the equipment such as finger, head and neck entrapment.
