摘要

In the wake of a government-backed study, the Canadian tobacco industry has been cleared of accusations of spiking cigarettes with more nicotine to make them addictive. The study showed that nicotine levels have actually decreased significantly since1968 forcing the federal government to acknowledge there has been no manipulation of nicotine content during processing. Conducted as part of the government's tobacco demand reduction strategy, the study analyzed seven different brands of Canadian cigarettes sold between 1968 and 1995. Results showed, on average, the amount of tobacco in each cigarette fell by 14 per cent in that time frame; that levels of nicotine in tobacco smoke varied but currently are down over that period and that the amount of tar in smoke has also decreased.
