Two studies sought to develop an instrument with which to measure offense-specific or state forgiveness called the Acts of Forgiveness Scale (AF). The first study (n = 381) involved (a) item generation informed by the developing psychological literature on forgiveness (b) psychometric procedures (e.g., Likert analyses, itemmetric analyses, test-retest reliability); whereas the second study (n = 813) included (c) a validity assessment. Results support the reliability and the validity of AF and some of the alternative measures of state forgiveness. These data also justify the theoretical distinction between offense-specific forgiveness and trait forgiveness.
