STOCKING conservatively during drought is, of course, the logical thing to do. But to do so during wet years too? Yes, running cattle at less than capacity during both good and poor water years is one of the best preparations for that inescapable year— or years — when there is little or no water. So says Utah State University Associate Professor Kenneth Olson, who studied what livestock producers can do before, during and after drought. Olson, who is with the university's animal, dairy and veterinary sciences depart- ment, says stocking conservatively in wet, normal or dry years pertains to rangeland and tame pasture situations.
