IF your farm is among the 60% or so of operations USDA expects to show a reasonable profit this year, you should emphasize debt repayment and purchase needed capital improvements from that black ink. "When times are good it's the time to pay down debt," says Damona Doye, a farm management economist for Oklahoma State University. "It's the perfect opportunity to get your financial house in order," Doye says. "Interest rates are going up, fuel prices don't look like they're going down much anytime soon, and fertilizer prices look about the same."
