Two Years Later: The Effect of Ethanol-Amended Gasoline on Day-to-Day Fuel Management and Storage Equipment. In 2005, Congress passed the Energy Policy Act, which mandated an increase in the amount of renewable fuels used in gasoline in the US. One year later, this national requirement was met by adding a total of 4 billion gallons of ethanol to gasoline (a total of 2.78% renewable fuel content). After a 2007 amendment to the Energy Independence and Security Act, requirements for ethanol blending were set at 9 billion gallons by 2008 and 36 billion gallons in 2022.
