While most conventional flue-cured and burley growers have been faced in recent years with increasingly higher prices for their inputs to grow a crop of tobacco, some 100 growers in the U.S. Canada and Brazil have found have found they can grow a more profitable tobacco crop without the use of chemicals and commercial fertilisers. Here's how it started:rnBack in 1982 a small, start-up tobacco company based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was founded by a couple of friends with a dream of creating a better cigarette. The founders of Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co (SFNTC) had decided they wanted to only use the 'lamina' part of the tobacco leaf. Plus, they decided not to add any flavorings or artificial ingredients - the opposite of the way the industry's largest manufacturers had gone with their business.
