The last-ever auction of flue-cured tobacco in Canada took place on February 5 at the lone remaining auction market, in Delhi, Ontario. The season sales total was just over 22 million pounds, with an average price of CAN$1.9944 (US$1.594) per pound.rnThe price was about six cents above the target price of $1.934 per pound, suggesting better quality than average. But it was down considerably from the 2007 crop average of $2.22 per pound, largely because the target price had been lowered between 2007 and 2008. By all reports, relatively few offerings from the 2008 failed to attract a bid.rnA former Canadian tobacco grower in Raleigh NC the week of the Tobacco Growers Association of NC meeting told a correspondent for World Tobacco that the Ontario auction market had been surprisingly strong.
